Lake District Volunteers Service

Trail Route Voluntary Lengthsmen

The Lake District National Park Authority and ‘The Hierarchy of Trail Routes in the Lake District Group’* want to develop a trail route voluntary lengthsmen scheme to help monitor and maintain trail routes in the National Park. We are looking for a group of volunteers who can undertake various tasks – helping look after different routes on an ‘adopt a trail principle’.

Tasks will include maintaining and repairing un-classified and green roads, landscaping work, as well as monitoring and surveying routes.

There will be help to support people in their volunteering role and we are planning a series of training sessions in early summer, beginning with a welcome event on Sunday 17 June 2007.

As a Trail Route volunteer we will ask volunteers to complete the following training, before ‘getting stuck in’ with their role:

·         Appointed person First Aid, unless you currently hold a valid certificate

·         Practical skills 1 – an introduction to green road maintenance

·         Practical skills 2 – green road maintenance and survey work

If you are interested in finding out more or to register your interest in getting involved, please get in touch with Tim Duckmanton on 01539 792674 or email tim.duckmanton@lake-district.gov.uk or HERE

Trail Route work party and project programme

In addition to the lengthsmen scheme the Lake District National Park Authority and ‘The Hierarchy of Trail Routes in the Lake District Group’ also plan to organise regular work party and project days where you are welcome to come along and get involved in practical trail-route repair and reconstruction tasks. You don’t need any particular training, as that will happen at the start of each day. You don’t even need to be a lengsthsmen, just be fit and willing to help out is all that is required! For more details on project either:  Dave Robinson on 01539 792649 or email dave.robinson@lake-district.gov.uk, or Geoff Wilson on 01768 898584 or email GeoffMoto@aol.com.
